Celebrating International Women’s Day

Happy International Women's Day to everyone celebrating the day!

This year, the UN Women Australia are promoting a theme that's close to our hearts “Count Her In: Invest in Women. Accelerate Progress”. It's a powerful call to action that encourages us to re-commit to the voice and needs of women, to invest in ourselves as women and to amplify the progress we need to make to ensure women’s experience is centrally on the table.

I have the pleasure of being in Sydney at the moment, and noted a quote from Mary Beard who is speaking here this week.

“You cannot easily fit women into a structure that is already coded as male; you have to change the structure”.

The structure needs to change and evolve to embrace and support the experiences of all humans. We all are aware of the outdated and oppressive systemic and structural barriers that have limited the broad range of human experience and expression to be valued and celebrated.

Although we may not all have the power to re-code the structure that Mary is referencing, one small step in this process is re-coding how we lead ourselves and using our more empowered momentum to contribute to the collective shift that is still so sorely needed for a better future for all humans.

The Power of Self-Leadership

In the spirit of investing and accelerating progress, let's talk about the role of self-leadership.

It's a game-changer for creating a more diverse, equal, and compassionate world. By honing our self-awareness, leading ourselves with confidence, and managing our actions intentionally, we're setting the stage for a future where everyone thrives – in our workplaces, communities, and beyond.

How Does Self-Leadership Pave the Way for a Thriving Future?

Self-leadership is about being the change we wish to see. It's about inspiring others by example and creating a ripple effect of positive transformation. Here’s how it can make a difference:

Fostering Resilience and Adaptability: Life's full of surprises, but armed with self-leadership, we can face challenges with grace and flexibility. By taking charge of how we respond to change, we inspire those around us to view challenges as opportunities for growth.

Encouraging Innovation and Creativity: Feeling empowered to lead ourselves sparks creativity and the courage to explore new ideas. This can create a culture where innovation flourishes, leading to fresh solutions and perspectives.

Building Inclusive and Supportive Environments: Recognising, valuing, and optimising our strengths and valuing others' diverse talents fosters an atmosphere where everyone feels appreciated. This inclusivity boosts teamwork and ensures all voices are heard, making our spaces more equitable and just.

Enhancing Communication and Collaboration: Good self-leadership improves how we communicate, promoting a stronger sense of community and teamwork. When we feel connected, we're more inclined to collaborate effectively, sharing resources and supporting each other towards shared goals.

Inspiring Leadership in Others: Lastly, by demonstrating that leadership is within everyone's reach, we empower others to step up, lead by example, and make our own positive impact.

‘May we cultivate and nurture a future where every woman is empowered to lead with courage, compassion, inclusion and integrity’ Rosalyn Christopoulos
