Learning is the elixir of youth!

Do you love learning?

You can probably guess that I am very much a lifelong learner.

I have come to see lifelong learning as the elixir of youth!

Individually, learning is a great way of keeping us agile, humble and open.

For a workplace, ongoing learning is critical for achieving optimal service delivery and workplace goals.

Unfortunately, not all workplaces value learning. Some workplaces cultivate learning and others crush it. This is evident through the strategies that are used when someone falls short of expectations, makes a mistake or puts forward an alternative view or perspective.

Learning brings an exceptional vitality to a workplace. A strong learning culture is great for staff performance, teamwork, employee wellbeing, engagement and retention.

Amy Edmondson’s research shows clearly that when workplaces provide an ecosystem where it is safe to learn, services and employees thrive.

Leaders have a critical roles in setting the tone for learning. How a leader approaches their own learning needs and that of their employees must be one of the most important factors in workplace functioning.

Leaders should model being a learner.

While owning your expertise, skills and strengths is vital, psychologically safe leaders are open about their learning goals; showing that even leaders are beginners in some areas. This provides team members with excellent modelling of how to put aside concerns of the ego and recognise that everyone is a learner, regardless of their role, career stage or status.

Be OK with asking advice or more information from experts and when others ask questions or own mistakes, recognise and value their willingness to learn.

What are your current learning goals for the rest of 2022?
