What drives positive supervision?

What drives positive supervision?

Positive supervision is focussed on learning and skill development.

Positive learning supports skill development and problem- solving, the supervisor will provide relevant information and resources to help the supervisee grow in their practice.

The learning in positive supervision may lean more towards reactive learning and less towards reflective and proactive learning. This means it may fall short of being as powerful an influence in career development, engagement and building longer term workforce capacity.

The pre-requisites for positive supervision are two participants, supervisee and supervisor who are open to learning, both willing to invest and actively participate. They must both be prepared to building a trusting, learning alliance.

A positive supervisory relationship is likely to have been based on a good shared understanding of supervision, a contracting process that enables supervisee and supervisor to articulate their preferences and intentions about building a good relationship.

The contracting process will consider not just the practicalities and learning goals of the supervisee.

As we reflect on the different levels of supervision, what is happening in your workplace?

What do you think the experiences are for supervisees?
