How workplaces can support best practice supervision?

Professional and Clinical Supervision is a co-created, collaborative learning focussed conversation between a supervisor and supervisee. It is a process of learning and support, designed to build self-directed learners and workforce capacity through practice skill development and reflective learning.

In practice however, it does not always take shape in this way.

At best, supervision can be a highly transformative experience that provides significant benefits to the supervisee, supervisor, and of course to the workplace.
At worst, supervision can be a waste of time or even worse, an invalidating, negative, traumatic or toxic experience.

The table below illustrates different supervisory experiences and the impact on learning, the supervisee, supervisor and the workplace. Over the next few weeks I will go through each of the experiences and highlight the impact on supervisees.

As we reflect on the different levels of supervision, what is happening in your workplace?

What do you think the experiences are for supervisees in your workplace?

If you'd like to make time for a virtual chat to discuss what value I can bring to your workplace, please don't hesitate to reach out or find out more about my supervision workshops.
